Regatta Presence at the ITB Berlin Fair

The Sawadee.com Regatta Samui had an amazing presence at this year's ITB Berlin Fair, one of the world's largest fairs for the travel and leisure industry. Samui was represented by a booth with 5m high images of regatta yachts and the regatta logo.

Sawadee.com handed out 6000 maps with a regatta advert and logo on them, 12000 flyers advertising a Thai International Package to Samui from Germany for the regatta, and 10,000 bags with a really big regatta logo above a map of Samui Island. Fantastic exposure for Samui and the Regatta. Thank you Web Sawasdee.

Koh Samui Regatta Bluewater Scholarship

We are very pleased to announce that the regatta will be launching the "Koh Samui Regatta Bluewater Scholarship" this year. Our aim is to raise 200, 000 Baht to go towards helping children on Samui achieve a better education. We are hoping to encourage regatta participants to support a school-driven beach clean-up on the island amongst other things, and will be announcing more details shortly.

Featured Event Partner - Sunsail Asia

This month we interrupted the busy schedule of Kevin Quilty, Managing Director of Sunsail Asia, a loyal partner of the regatta and sponsor of the Junior Sailing Squadron's yacht "Perigot" that will be competing in the regatta this year.

So who are you and what are your responsibilities?
I have been working for Sunsail now for 19 years, and for the past 17 years I have been responsible for our Asia business.

What is your interest and Sunsail's interest in Koh Samui?
We were looking for new destinations to operate in and the Koh Samui group of islands makes a beautiful cruising area and this has given our clients another excellent sailing destination in Thailand.

How did that come about?
With the introduction of a bigger newer fleet of yachts into Thailand.

What is your favorite thing about the island?
It has a bit of everything.

What is your relationship with sailing and when did it start?
I first got into the business when working at Brighton Marina in 1988 and soon realised that it would be better to sail & work in a hotter climate, that's where Sunsail came in

How did you become involved with supporting John Stall's Junior Sailors?
We feel that we do have an obligation to help with junior sailing and to try and get as many people as possible out on the water at an early age to experience it. John is very proactive in this so it is a pleasure to help out where we can.

What are you looking forward to most about the regatta this year?
Just being a part of a great event and meeting all the interesting people.

Please tell us more about Sunsail Asia?
I am very proud to announce the launch of 'The Moorings' at this years regatta. For the first time in Asia 'The Moorings' will be operating charter yachts ranging in size from 37ft to 47ft, including 4 Leopard Powers cats and
2 x 46ft Leopard sailing cats.

The Leopard 47 will be at the Samui Regatta so I hope this will create a lot of interest.

February

The Countdown begins...

Dear Friends of the Samui Regatta,

3 Months to go and counting...

Major sponsors, the MobyElite team, the island team and the racing team are working really super-hard to complete their respective tasks on time to keep up the expected quality and high standards that everyone has come to expect. I can report that things are going smoothly as the entry forms come in.

Please see the information below from our Race Director Simon James who has just spent a week on the Island to finalise the on-water support and local volunteers . Thank you.

For Yachts planning to visit TOTG and KSR from overseas, we have been working out the finer details with the Immigration, Custom and Harbour Departments. Please see the very important information below regarding customs and immigration procedures.

An exciting new addition to the regatta this year - Seatran Discovery Yacht will be available as a hospitality boat on all of the racing days. Non-sailors and holiday-makers will be able to buy spectator tickets to spend a day watching all of the action on the water with food and drink provided. We very much hope that this will add even more of a buzz to our popular event.

Interest so far is very good and this year the regatta will have a diverse Ocean Multihull class with Corsairs competing with larger boats from Samui and Pattaya.
For those of you who have shown an interest in attending and have not yet sent in your entry forms - make the most of an extended "Early Bird" entry fee period until March 15th - get those forms in!!

Featured Event Partner - Nikki Beach

This month we asked General Manager, Andreas (Andy) Tsalvos to shift from his busy schedule for famed Nikki Beach opening on Samui in March and share how he and Nikki Beach came to Samui and what the scoop is on this famed global beach club located in the world's most highly prized 'hot' beach destinations.

So who are you and what are your responsibilities?

I'm the current director of operations and opening GM for Nikki Beach Koh Samui , part of the global and highly recognized jet set beach club with venues situated in some of the most beautiful locales around the world. Previously the General Manager for Nikki Beach locations in Miami and NYC, I am very excited to be part of this amazing project and a new resident of Samui.

What is your interest in Koh Samui, and that of Nikki Beach?

Thailand has always been the leading destination for an exotic cultural experience. Koh Samui, being one of Thailand's most beautiful and lush islands, makes it the perfect hot spot and fit for the Nikki Beach jetsetters. With the majority of our venues located in the Caribbean, United States and the Mediterranean, it was only a matter of time until we made our way to Asia making Thailand and the island of Samui part of the company's well-established jet set itinerary.

What is your favorite thing about the island?

Where can one start? From the endless golden beaches and coconut dressed mountains to the magical sunsets that light up the sky, the entire landscape is astonishing. Of course what makes Koh Samui so unique and exceptionally different from other exotic destinations is indisputably the people of Koh Samui themselves. I doubt anyone can find friendlier or a more welcoming group of people that clearly set the island apart.

What is your relationship and that of Nikki Beach with sailing?

From a young age I have been close to the Sea, first in the mediterranean and later in the Caribbean, sea and sailing have always been part of my life. For Nikki beach sailing is one of the many cultural and lifestyle activities always one step away and available for all our guests. It was only natural for our company to join this year's Regatta as an official Event Partner and we are very delighted to have the opportunity to participate in this internationally renowned lifestyle event featuring our island.

What are you looking forward to most about the regatta?

Surely looking forward to seeing some of the most beautiful yachts and sailboats in the region and of course meeting all the captains and crews that will travel from around the globe to compete in this extraordinary week long race . Nikki Beach will be hosting a signature event for all participants and spectators to enjoy, bringing together locals, expatriates and travelers from around the world.
The Regatta is unquestionably a first class international sporting event offering a great chance to showcase Nikki Beach and Koh Samui around the world.

Please tell us more about Nikki Beach and Nikki Beach Resort Samui.

Nikki Beach was founded in 1996 by Jack Penrod in Miami and established the standard of an outstanding beach club experience. Nikki Beach with 18 properties in 8 different countries is now the premier worldwide luxury brand synonymous with jet set travel, leisure and entertainment. Offering theatrical entertainment with signature Nikki Beach style, these interactive events are heavily influenced by Art, Music, Fashion, & Film and are the hallmark of the Nikki Beach experience. The new Nikki Beach Samui Resort is a fabulous beach-front property. Located on the island's West Coast shores of Lipa Noi beach, the resort sits beachside, lending picturesque views of the magnificent Thai sunsets.

The Beach Club Restaurant where guests can savor exotic global cuisine and fresh local seafood dining opens this month , as well as the Pool Bar and Sunset Terrace Lounge deck for a soft opening while the location prepares for its Grand Opening White Party in April. The Amazing Sunday's party along with retail operations are scheduled to follow shortly thereafter.

The Nikki Beach lifestyle can now be experienced in eight different countries: Miami Beach, FL; Hollywood, FL; Saint-Tropez, France; St. Barth, French West Indies; Marbella, Spain; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Marrakech, Morocco; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands; New York City, NY; and Koh Samui, Thailand.

Dear Friends of the Samui Regatta,

5 months to go and all is going well on the Island with the organising Team. There are many things to look forward to in June!

It feels good to be under the patronage of our new title partner Sawadee.com. It is an established island organisation, well managed with good governance and principle, and offers a stability that ensures the future of the regatta and makes it all worthwhile.

The Kids' mini regatta will be back on the lay day under Coach Squall's supervision, and there will be the usual get together at Tradewinds.

I would like to officially introduce Siobhan Kennedy who has joined the Team and is managing the whole MobyElite operations side of the Regatta. She is a keen Platu Sailor at the Ocean Marina, and a renowned Sports events manager - we are definitely moving the Regatta up a notch. Welcome Shivy.

Also as we come closer to the Regatta, the tradition of hearing Captain Squall's comments from Tradewinds resumes - he's getting ready for the regatta with the strobelight and deadly welcome cocktails. See what he has to say below.

Lastly, the next Regatta on this side of the ocean is the Top Of The Gulf Regatta at Ocean Marina, Pattaya - a fantastic facility. You can see their latest newsletter below. I personally sail at every monthly Regatta there, now on Breakaway and earlier with Vivace. They are friendly and helpful and have all that you need for repair and maintenance on the way to Samui.

This year we are planning to have a combined TOTG/ Samui trophy for Thai flags to encourage Pattaya yachts, but overall we are hoping for international entries participating in both Regattas. Ocean Marina are offering a free berth to all participants in both TOTG and Samui between Regattas. Early entries Jelik and Ichi Ban have already taken advantage of this great deal so register for both Regatta's now if you don't want to miss out.

Good winds and fair weather

Frankie Brancaccio,

Regatta GM

Scuttlebutt from Cap'n Squall

This year's Samui Regatta promises to be the most exciting on record now the 12 ft. Skiff Association have confirmed that they will hold an Australia v New Zealand regatta the week preceding our K.S.R.

Six skiffs from each country will arrive by containers towards the end of May, sailing out front of Centara and Tradewinds in Chaweng, and race over a course set as close to the beach as possible, to entertain the spectators. For those who don't know, there is nothing more thrilling than to watch an Aussie/Kiwi confrontation, so bring your cheer flags.

Also during the K.S.R., the island's juniors from Samui Yacht Club and Samui yacht Club Regatta will compete in their own one day regatta on the layday. The Skiff Association will donate one of the skiffs each year and help build a class locally and these boats will be available to sailors from Pattaya and Phuket also.

Featured Partner - Centara Grand Beach Resort

This month we interrupted the busy schedule of Jacques Mury, General Manager of Centara Grand Beach Resort, Samui, to give you the inside story.

So who are you and what are your responsibilities?
No interruption at all! It is a pleasure to answer your questions. Besides managing Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, a 200 plus room Resort right on the most beautiful part of Chaweng Beach, I believe that I am a good hearted and open minded person who cares about others.

What is your interest in Koh Samui?
I always thought and still do think that Koh Samui is a fantastic beach holiday destination that suits everyone: Families, couples, single persons, elderly and youngsters alike. To me the main attraction is obviously the beach but having walked the Island east-west and North-South, I can guarantee you that there are some incredibly beautiful and untouched spots in the center of it.

How did it come about?
Pretty much the same way one starts another job! I was looking for a new opportunity, Centara (Central at the time) was looking for a GM and it so happened... some 9 years ago!

What is your favorite thing about the island?
So many different and interesting people on such a small space, really surprising! The small scale of everything enables one to truly get to know people.

What is your relationship with sailing?
Not a very good one as I am easily sea sick or should I say my best relationship with sailing is the "after" sailing "activities" just like you have your after skiing in the mountains. Nothing like the Regatta Tavern!

What are you looking forward to most about the regatta?
When it is successfully over with! Meaning with no rain at the 500 guest Award dinner! Of course it is extraordinary to see years after years all these friends from almost all around the world and some of the most beautiful yachts and sailboats!

Please tell us more about Centara Grand Beach Resort?
Positively one of the best located hotels of the Island offering the best of both worlds: tranquility in our huge garden and walking distance to all the shopping areas and the night life!

The hotel was completely renovated in 2007 and offers a great variety of rooms all with ocean view. From Deluxe rooms to Royal suite we also offer one bedroom suites, pool suites of all sizes and a variety of Asian and Continental cuisines without forgetting our famous Zico's Brazilian Grill and Bar located opposite the hotel to ensure that we get back guests who sneak out!

The hotel was built in 1995 on Chaweng Beach Road which was still a dirt road with nothing in the back of the hotel! These were the days when the only neighbour was precisely John Stall who convinced me to take the challenge of organizing the first edition of the Regatta back in 2002.

A year end high on the sailing circuit

Dear Friends,

Congratulations to all of those who took part in the 22nd King's Cup Regatta last week. A special mention goes to overall winner Ray Roberts on Quantum Racing - what a great year he has had and we look forward to having him back in Samui in 2009.

For full King's Cup race results go to www.kingscup.com/

The end of November also saw the Blue Wave Serenity series at Ocean Marina draw to a close. Please got to omycsailing.com
for full results.

Preparations for Sawadee.com Regatta Samui are well underway with a very impressive sponsorship line up including Sawadee.com, Centara, and Raimon Land to name just a few. This will guarantee the usual high level of parties and off the water activities.

The Junior optimists are sporting the new Regatta logo on their bows and going out every weekend in a stiff, north easterly under Coach Squall supervision.

This year the Regatta will also have an environmental angle. Under discussion at the moment, beach cleaning and reef preservation.

Boats will also be available for spectators to chase the fleet and the usual charter yachts from Sunsail Samui base and Gulf Charters.

Latest news is that funding for a 100 berth marina has been discussed in Samui. The tentative name will be Big Buddha Marina and, if all goes to plan, it should be operative in a couple of years. We should all be proud as the Samui Regatta has been the catalyst for this decision to be made.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a windy new year,

Frankie

Top of the Gulf Regatta
As this newsletter is being written the logistics for OMYC refurbishment and expansion is well under way. A large barge and piling deck is being floated off the launching ramps and work on piling is expected to start without delay.

A dredging will be done on several refurbished berths to allow 4 meter draft at low tides. These berths will be allocated on a first come first served basis for yachts with paid up entries. For further details contact gasson@buzzcats.com

A team of six PR staff have attended the first three days of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta and have conducted over 120 interviews with skippers and sailors. The primary aim is to acquaint all participants of the TOG and secondary to gather general information on the competitors. As a courtesy the results will be shared with PKCR and Ko Samui Regattas.

Progress towards the 2009 TOG is progressing well with some Hong Kong interest being shown in the two Gulf Regattas, TOP of the Gulf 30th April-4th May and the Koh Samui Regatta first week of June. This is due to improved communications with owners and the promise of deeper berths. As previously advised free or subsidized moorings will be given to boats competing in both events.

Featured Partner - Sawadee.com

This month we interrupted the busy schedule of Christian Lukey, the Chief Operating Officer of Web Sawadee plc to give you the inside story.

So who are you and what are your responsibilities?
Well - I am Christian ... Chief Operating Officer of Web Sawadee Plc and in principle, in charge of the smooth running of the company from all perspectives - customers as well as suppliers

What is your interest in Koh Samui?
Koh Samui was my first 'home' in Thailand when I started working in Asia as an expatriate hotelier - just upon graduating from the Lausanne Hotel School. In principle I had in mind to stop in Thailand on the way to Australia, but to-date and 10 years later - I have not taken that step, nor am considering anything close to it.
As for now, Koh Samui is the cradle of our company, which is mainly oriented towards web technology infrastructure. The tour operating part is split between both our Bangkok and Koh Samui offices From this perspective it was an ideal opportunity for us to join forces with the regatta and to bring it to new heights, both for the destination and the event itself.
We are aiming to bring a much more environmental conscience to the destination and obviously this type of event can be a great deliverer of such awareness

What is your favorite thing about the island?
Whilst the destination has grown tremendously over the recent past years, it keeps an 'island in the sun' feel to it.

What is your relationship with sailing?
I have very quickly developed a passion for non-motorised watersport, from beach catamaran sailing to offshore cruising, as well as funboarding - in the days it was popular - and I guess I was younger. I have sailed up and down the lesser Antilles a few times as well as the Med, and then ended up as a crew on a 18.5 meter America's Cup design racing boat on the Lake of Geneva - along with another 12 crew members.

What are you looking forward to most about the regatta?
The thrilling combination of all the components: the sailing, the people, the parties. The island blossoming over a week of racing, whilst it would normally be a rather slow time of the year in terms of business for the island's shops, restaurants and hotels.

Please tell us more about Sawadee.com and Web Sawadee plc?
Web Sawadee Plc is the owner company of the online brand sawadee.com, along with many other brands in the online and offline world: - r24.org, our agent affiliation system and res24.com the international hotel booking engine as well as One to book, our agencies for air ticketing and domestic travelling. We are currently among the top 5 inbound tour operating companies into the Kingdom in terms of volume of production with a team of nearly 100 employees.

This is a very important partnership as it will enable the Regatta to continue to grow and showcase the sport and this great island to an ever wider audience..

" Christian Lukey, Web Sawadee Plc Chief Operating Officer said : As a Koh Samui born organisation, we have watched the Regatta grow in status and popularity over the years so it makes perfect sense to us to come on board as Title Sponsor. We are keen to show visitors to the region that Koh Samui is so much more than just a beach destination......".

The Regatta in 2009 is set to reach a whole new level and our new partner will help us share this magical event with a greater audience. Next year we will focus on showing our much loved island and sailing to a much wider and younger audience in Asia, building a true Sport & Lifestyle event.

As with all our partners, we encourage you to use their services so please visit www.sawadee.com

More exciting news:
As the final stop of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix the Samui Regatta is also proud to introduce a new Regatta participant. The much respected Top Of The Gulf Regatta in Pattaya will now be joining the championship. A letter from the esteemed Bill Gasson, Regatta Chairman, is below or can be seen here.

Also, we have reconfirmed the on the water team and the International Jury all under the capable management of our Race Director Simon James who did such a great job in the trying conditions of last year.

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that MobyElite & The Sawadee.com Regatta Samui entered in a sponsorship agreement with the Junior Club under John Stall's direction. The Regatta will support the Club with a monthly donation to cover fixed costs and allow John to fully concentrate on the Kids' development. Featured Event Partner - Dunlopillo

This month we talked to Dale Lamb of Dunlopillo, a co-partner of the regatta for the first time.

So who are you and what are your responsibilities?
I am the Marketing and Manufacturing Director of Dunlopillo (Thailand) Limited. I have been working with Dunlopillo for over 10 years managing all aspects of the business.

People spend over a third of their lives on a bed and therefore the designs and theory of putting together the right mattresses are of fundamental importance to me.

What is your interest and Dunlopillo’s interest in Koh Samui?
We have been working with resorts and hotels in the area for many years and have seen a large increase in housing developments, apartments, Hotels and 5 star holiday homes.

For instance we recently supplied the 5-star Dhevatara developments with all their mattresses, linen and toweling. We believe in developing close, long-term, professional relationships with all our clients so we can work together to satisfy their unique needs and requirements.

What is your favorite thing about the island?
Koh Samui is a great place. I have been visiting the island for over 22 years, including coming here for my honeymoon, my wife’s 30th birthday, and one of best friend’s wedding last year.

I know it’s a cliché but I think that Samui offers something for everyone from incredible nightlife and restaurants and amazing design hotels, to outdoor sports, holistic retreats and quiet secluded spots for those who are just looking to relax and let the world pass by.

What is your relationship with sailing and when did it start?
I have always been a keen water enthusiast. From sailing ‘Hobie cats’ with my daughter on the weekends in Hua Hin to a 48 hour (4 hour shifts) sail from Bangkok to Koh Samui a few years ago.
Whereever I go on holiday I need to be close to water. Whether it’s fishing, sailing or kite surfing - a good day on the water is the best day in the world.

What are you looking forward to most about the regatta this year?
Being a co-partner for the first time I am looking forward to meeting the experienced crews of the yachts and being able to listen and hopefully learn new things about sailing and the lives they lead.
The Parties and the socializing is an important part of the week as well. Last year the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone had a great time.
I am also looking forward to meeting many of the developers and owners of new and old resorts on the island.

Please tell us more about Dunlopillo
Dunlopillo is the longest serving international bedding brand in Thailand. We have used customer service and product quality as our guiding principles and have become one of the leading brands in the Kingdom.
We provide a full range of mattresses, pool side waterproof sun beds, linen, pillows and toweling as a one stop shop to assist all our partners.

From my whole team we wish the participants, sponsors and spectators a fantastic and enjoyable week. Most of all sleep well. A quality nights sleep will make the difference between a good holiday and a fantastic one.
