Regatta Samui 2012: May 28th - June 2nd

If you have any great memories or funny stories from past events please share them here.

This is a great story from Greg Coups on Abraxas that we featured in last years Program.

"Abraxas isn’t the most serious competitor on the racecourse – a significant premium is placed on having a laugh. Fortunately we’re not doing this to earn a living.

One of the boring bits about regattas in our part of the world is waiting around for the wind to pick up. On the last day two years ago the KSR committee was desperately trying to stage one more race to close the event. As a heavy boat that was clinging to a podium finish we were hoping that another light air race didn’t happen. To make our point we hoisted the spinnaker, put the engine on and motored backwards through the fleet and towards the committee boat with the kite filled beautifully.

It took a while for the fleet and the race officer to realize that we didn’t have any wind. We executed a perfect reverse gybe over the start line, backwards, with the music on, the tambourines out and some of our competitors in tow. That bit of slapstick relieved the tension - the last race was quickly abandoned and we thankfully headed back to the bar."
